North Career Avenue Roundabout at University Center
Sayre Associates performed the design services for the State Engineer’s Office for the extension of N. Career Avenue through the campus of the new South Dakota University Center.  It was important to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing primary access to the main campus as well as calm traffic for the interaction of vehicles and pedestrians near the campus.  A modern roundabout was the logical choice.

Coordination with the architectural design was critical as the university facilities were designed and constructed concurrently with the street project.  The classroom and research buildings are rotated about the roundabout center and are located in different quadrants of the roundabout. An overhead pedestrian link connects the two buildings with a center support column in the median.  Sayre Associates worked closely with University Center, TSP, the State Engineer’s Office, and the City Engineer’s Office in providing the civil engineering solutions for the first roundabout intersection in the state of South Dakota.
